The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 5:45 p.m. this day, in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Watt, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Andreychuk, Comeau and Watt (4).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Wilson (1).

In attendance: Researchers: Larry Chartrand and Konrad Sioui.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Conseil de la nation Atikamekw:

Mr. Ernest Awashish, Président;

Mr. Marc Dubé, Chief Negotiator.

From the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake:

Grand Chief Joseph "Tokwiro" Norton;

Mr. Frank Vieni, Federal Negotiator;

Mr. Arnold Goodleaf, Director, Intergovernmental Relations Team (IRT).

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 9, 1997, the Committee continued its examination of aboriginal self-government. ( See Issue No. 11, Tuesday, November 3, 1998 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Mr. Ernest Awashish made an opening statement and, together with Mr. Marc Dubé, answered questions.

At 6:45 p.m., Grand Chief Joseph "Tokwiro" Norton made an opening statement and, together with Mr. Goodleaf and Mr. Vieni, answered questions.

At 7:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
