The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 705-VB, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Stratton, Cools, Ferretti Barth, Forest, Johnson, Lavoie-Roux, Mercier and Moore (8).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Public Service Alliance of Canada:

Daryl Bean, National President;

Nycole Turmel, National Executive Vice-President;

Steve Jelly, Executive Assistant to the Executive Committee.

From the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada:

Steve Hindle, President;

Bob McInstosh, Policy Advisor;

Richard Bellaire, Research Officer and Compensation Analyst.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 18, 1998, the committee resumed its examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999.

Mr. Bean and Ms Turmel made a statement and, with the assistance of Mr. Jelly, answered questions.

Mr. Hindle made a statement and, with the assistance of Messrs McIntosh and Bellaire, answered questions.

At 7:15 p.m., the committee proceeded in camera to consider future business.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Moore, -- That the budget of the committee in the amount of $17,000 for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999, be adopted.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 7:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
