The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Terrance R. Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bolduc, Bryden, Carstairs, Cools, Eyton, Forest, Lavoie-Roux, Moore and Stratton (9).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Public Service Commission:

Ms Ruth Hubbard, President;

Mr. Jean-Guy Fleury, Executive Director, Resourcing and Learning;

Ms Judith Moses, Executive Director, Policy Research and Communications.

From the Privy Council Office:

Ms Jocelyne Bourgon, Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet;

Mr. Peter Harrison, Assistant Deputy Minister and Head of the Task Force La Relève.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 18, 1998, the committee continued its examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999.

Ms Hubbard made a statement and, with the other witnesses from the Public Service Commission, answered questions.

Ms Bourgon made a statement and, with the assistance of Mr. Harrison, answered questions.

At 7:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
