The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, honourable Senator Stratton, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Stratton, Bolduc, Cook, Cools, Fraser, Lavoie-Roux, Mahovlich and Moore (8).
In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 4, 1999, the committee continued its examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000.
APPEARING:
Mr. Tony Ianno, M.P., Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board.
WITNESSES:
From the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat:
Mr. Stephen Lane, Director, Expenditures Analysis.
Mr. Ianno made an opening statement and with Mr. Lane answered questions.
At a later date Treasury Board will provide written responses to questions asked by members of the committee.
The committee considered its future business.
It was agreed, that the committee should hear from officials from the Canadian International Development Agency at a future meeting.
It was agreed to instruct staff to prepare a draft report containing the committee and the Subcommittee on Canada's Emergency and Disasters findings with regards to its examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, May 12, 1999, the committee began its examination of Bill C-71, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 16, 1999.

Mr. Valeri made an opening statement and with the witnesses answered questions.
Mr. Hindle made an opening statement and with Mr. McIntosh answered questions.
Senator Cools moved, -- That the committee complete clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-71.
After debate, and by unanimous consent, Senator Cools withdrew her motion.
At 8:50 p.m., Senator Lavoie-Roux moved that the committee do now adjourn.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
