The Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration met in camera, this day at 9:05 a.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Rompkey presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, DeWare, Di Nino, Forrestall, LeBreton, Maheu, Nolin, Poulin, Robichaud (Saint-Louis-de-Kent ), Rompkey, Stollery and Taylor. (12).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Bosa and Tkachuk (2).

In attendance: Mr. Paul Bélisle, Clerk of the Senate, and other Senate officials.

It was agreed that the committee proceed in camera.

At 10:55 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

It was agreed that the budget application of the Standing Committee on Transport and Communications (Canada's international competitive position in communications) be adopted ($152,350).

Budget -- Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs (Legislation)

It was agreed that the budget of the Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee (legislation) be adopted ($31,400).

Budget -- Special Joint Committee to review Term 17 of the Terms of Union of Newfoundland with Canada

It was agreed that the budget of the Special Joint Committee to review Term 17 of the Terms of Union of Newfoundland with Canada be adopted ($21,667.50 - Senate share).

Budget -- Standing Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources (Legislation)

It was agreed that the budget application of the Standing Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources (legislation) be adopted ($17,069).

Budget -- Special Committee on the Cape Breton Development Corporation

It was agreed that the budget applications of the Special Committee on the Cape Breton Development Corporation be adopted ($13,700).

Budget -- Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce (legislation - bills and pre-study of bills)

It was agreed that the budget application of the Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce (legislation - bills and pre-study of bills) be adopted ($171,704).

It was agreed that the travel portion of this budget application be used only for the study of Bill C-2 (Canada Pension Plan).

It was agreed that the budget application of the Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce (financial system in Canada) be adopted ($255,586).

Report Budgets to the Senate

It was agreed that these budgets be reported to the Senate.

Subcommittee on Information Technologies

It was agreed that the Subcommittee on Information Technologies (Chair: Senator De Bané) be struck to:

-consider, review, set priorities for and make recommendations on Senators' office automation needs;

- consider all issues arising from office automation in the Senate and monitor implementation of the information technology strategic planning at the Senate;

- investigate and report on any change or rectification likely to be made to the memorandum of agreement currently in effect on Parliament Hill.

It was also agreed that the membership of the subcommittee be established at the next meeting of the committee.

At 10:15 am, the committee adjourned.
