The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 9:30 a.m., in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Lise Bacon, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Bacon, Callbeck, Finestone, P.C., Finnerty, Forrestall, Kirby, LeBreton, Poulin, Roberge and Spivak (11).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Fairbairn, P.C., Kinsella, Oliver and Watt (4).

In attendance: Martin Brennan and Keith Miller, special advisors to the committee

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Onex Corporation:

Gerald Schwartz, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer;

Nigel Wright, Principal.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 14, 1999, the committee proceeded to study the order laid before the Senate on September 14, 1999, authorizing certain major air carriers and persons to negotiate and enter into any conditional agreement, pursuant to subsection 47(5) of the Canada Transportation Act. (See Issue No. 1, Tuesday, October 26, 1999 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Mr. Schwartz made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed, -- That the letter from Onex to Bill Casey be filed with the Clerk of the Committee as Exhibit 5900-2.36/T1-S1-08-06.

At 11:40 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
