The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day, in camera at 7:00 p.m. in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Callbeck, Chalifoux, Comeau, Cook, Corbin, Johnson, Kenny, Mahovlich, Moore, Robertson (11).

Participating by telephone: The Honourable Senator Carney, P.C. (1).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES

From the Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Caledon:

Charles Birchall, Legal Counsel;

Rodney Northey, Legal Counsel; and

Andrew Dumyn, Member.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, the committee continued its examination upon the matters relating to the fishing industry. (See Issue No. 1, March 20, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Mr. Birchall, Mr. Northey and Mr. Dumyn made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 7:00 p.m. the committee considered its future business in camera.

At 8:00 p.m. the committee heard witnesses.

It was agreed -- That the Chair would write a letter on behalf of the committee to Fisheries and Oceans Canada for further clarification of the situation in Caledon so that the committee could decide whether to call witnesses from the Department.

It was agreed -- That the material presented by the Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Caledon be filed as an exhibit with the Clerk of the committee (Exhibit 5900 F1-SS-1, 2"2").

It was moved by Senator Robertson -- That the following budget application for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2002 be concurred in, and -- That the Chair submit same to the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.

Professional and Other Services $ 12,500

Transportation and Communications $ 28,000

Other Expenses $ 2,750

TOTAL $ 43,250

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 9:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
