The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries met this day at 7:15 p.m. in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Gerald Comeau, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Comeau, Cook, Hubley, Jaffer, Mahovlich, Meighen, Phalen, Robertson, Watt (10).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Claude Emery, Research Officer.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, March 25, 2002, the Committee continued its examination of matters relating to oceans and fisheries (See Issue No. 17, April 16, 2002, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

APPEARING:

The Honourable Robert G. Thibault, P.C., M.P., Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

WITNESSES:

From Fisheries and Oceans Canada:

Mr. Patrick Chamut, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries Management;

Ms Ruth Dantzer, Associate Deputy Minister, Fisheries Management.

Mr. Thibault made a statement and responded to questions.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Robertson — That the Response of Fisheries and Oceans Canada to the committee's report entitled Aquaculture in Canada's Atlantic and Pacific Regions] be printed as an appendix to this day's Minutes of Proceedings (see Appendix 5900-1.37/F1-SS-1, 20 ``1'').

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted in the affirmative.

At 8:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
