The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, at 11:03 a.m., the Chair, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cook, Cordy, Fairbairn, P.C., Graham, P.C., Hubley, Kirby, LeBreton, Morin, Robertson and Roche (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Cohen (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore and Howard Chodos.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 1, 2001, the committee continued its consideration of the special study on the state of the health care system in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Dr. Alan Bernstein, President.

From Health Canada:

Kimberly Elmslie, Acting Executive Director, Health Research Secretariat.

From Statistics Canada:

T. Scott Murray, Director General, Institution and Social Statistics Branch.

Dr. Bernstein made a presentation and answered questions.

Ms Elmslie made a presentation and answered questions.

Mr. Murray made a presentation and answered questions.

The following witnesses submitted a brief:

Canadian Institute of Health Research, Health Canada and Statistics Canada.

The committee discussed future business.

At 1:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
