The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day in camera, in room 705, Victoria Building, at 3:42 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cook, Cordy, Fairbairn, Keon, Kirby, Morin, LeBreton, Pépin and Roche (9).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore and Howard Chodos, from the office of Senator Cordy: James MacNeil, from the office of Senator Kirby: Jeff MacLeod, from the office of Senator Pépin: Momar Diagne, from the office of Senator Robertson: Ross McKean, from the office of Senator Roche: Todd Martin, from the office of Senator Callbeck: Mary Moore, from the office of Senator Fairbairn: Megan Cain, from the Committees and Private Legislation Directorate: Debbie Pizzoferrato and staff from the Page Programme, Interpretation Services and the Senate Messengers.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 1, 2001, the committee continued its consideration of the special study on the state of the health care system in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No. 2.)

The committee considered its draft report.

It was agreed — That the committee meet at 9:00 a.m. instead of 3:30 p.m. on March 6, 2002 in order to continue discussion on the draft report.

The committee considered the following draft budget:

Professional Services $100,000
Transportation and Communication  181,660
Other Expenditures 11,000
TOTAL  $292,660

 It was agreed — That the draft budget be altered to incorporate attendance to national or international health- related conferences, and that the revised budget be submitted by the Chairman to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration for its consideration.

At 4:50 p.m. the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cook, Cordy, Fairbairn, Keon, Morin, LeBreton, Léger and Roche (8).
