The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day, in camera, in room 705, Victoria Building, at 9:15 a.m., the Chair, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cook, Cordy, Kirby, Morin and Roche (6).
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Howard Chodos, from the office of Senator Cordy: James MacNeil, from the office of Senator Kirby: Jeff MacLeod, from the office of Senator Pépin: Momar Diagne, from the office of Senator Roche: Todd Martin, from the office of Senator Callbeck: Mary Moore, from the office of Senator Fairbairn: Megan Cain, from the Committees and Private Legislation Directorate: Debbie Pizzoferrato, from Burke Cader Media Strategies Inc.: John Burke and staff from the Page Programme, Interpretation Services and the Senate Messengers.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 1, 2001, the committee continued its consideration of the special study on the state of the health care system in Canada. (For complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)
On the motion of Senator Callbeck, it was agreed — That the committee engage John Burke and Alvin Cader as media and communications consultants to the committee.
The committee considered its draft report.
At 11:23 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The Deputy Chair made a statement.
Ms Sharon Sholzberg-Gray made a statement. Mr. Georgetti made a statement. The witnesses answered questions.
At 12:40 p.m., the committee agreed to proceed in camera.
The committee discussed future business.
At 12:55 p.m., the committee continued in public.
The committee considered a revised draft budget.
It was moved by Senator Morin — That, notwithstanding the order adopted by this committee on Wednesday, February 20, 2002, the committee concur in the following revised budget application for the purpose of its consideration of the state of the health care system in Canada and that the Chairman be authorized to submit the revised budget to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration for its consideration:
