The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:08 a.m. in room 257, East Block, the Acting Chair, the Honourable Senator Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Christensen, Léger, Sibbeston and Stratton (5).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator St. Germain, P.C.

In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, and from Nation Media and Design, Guy Freedman.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 29, 2002, the committee continued its examination of issues affecting urban aboriginal youth in Canada, in particular, access, provision and delivery of services, policy and jurisdictional issues, employment and education, access to economic opportunities, youth participation and empowerment, and other related matters.

WITNESS:

From the Government of Saskatchewan:

Brent Cotter, Q.C., Deputy Minister, Government Relations and Aboriginal Affairs.

It was agreed that Senator Christensen take the Chair in Senator Stratton's absence.

Mr. Cotter made a presentation and answered questions.

At 9:35 a.m., Senator Christensen took the Chair.

At 10:00 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 6:15 p.m. in room 160, Centre Block, the Acting Chair, the Honourable Senator Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Christensen, Léger, Sibbeston and Stratton (5).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, and from Nation Media and Design, Guy Freedman.

Warren Crowchild, Founder.

Mr. Crowchild made an introductory statement and answered questions.

The Honourable Senator Christensen moved — That effective March 3, 2003, the Honourable Senator Johnson be Deputy Chair of the Committee.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The Honourable Senator Christensen moved — That the restrictions on holding meetings to receive and print evidence without quorum, as set out in the committee's decision dated on October 30, 2003, be suspended from March 17 to March 21, inclusive.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 7:18 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
