The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met at 4:15 p.m. this day, in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Kolber, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Kelleher, P.C., Kolber, Kroft, Meighen, Oliver, Prud'homme, P.C., Setlakwe and Tkachuk (9).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Economic Division: Ms. June Dewetering, Acting Principal.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 6, 2002, the committee continued its examination into the public interest implications for large bank mergers. (See Issue No. 5, November 25, 2002, for full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From the Credit Union Central of Canada:

Joanne DeLaurentiis, President and Chief Executive Officer;

David Phillips, Vice-President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary;

Jonathan Guss, President and Chief Executive Officer, Credit Union Central of Ontario.

Ms. DeLaurentiis and Mr. Guss made statements and, with Mr. Phillips, answered questions.

At 5:20 p.m. the committee continued in camera pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) for the purpose of considering a draft report.

At 6:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Kolber, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Kelleher, P.C., Kolber, Kroft, Meighen, Oliver, Prud'homme, P.C., Setlakwe and Tkachuk (9).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Ms. June Dewetering, Acting Principal, Economic Division.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 23, 2002, the committee continued its examination into the present state of the domestic and international financial system with particular emphasis on the Canadian perspective to the Enron collapse. (See Issue No. 1, October 23-24, 2002, for full text of the Order of Reference.)

Mr. Crawford made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:15 p.m. the committee continued in camera pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) for the purpose of considering a draft report.

The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met in camera pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) for the purpose of considering a draft report, at 10:15 a.m., in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Kolber, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Fitzpatrick, Kelleher, P.C., Kolber, Kroft, Meighen, Oliver, Prud'homme, P.C., Setlakwe and Tkachuk (10).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Economic Division: Ms. June Dewetering, Acting Principal.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, November 6, 2002, the committee continued its examination into the public interest implications for large bank mergers. (See Issue No. 5, November 25, 2002, for full text of the Order of Reference.)

The committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that the draft report be adopted with the proposed changes that were discussed.

At 11:40 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
