The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 3:55 p.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cook, Cordy, Kirby, LeBreton, Léger, Morin, Roche (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Kinsella (1).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore and Howard Chodos.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 4, 2003, the committee began its consideration of issues arising from, and developments since, the tabling of its final report on the state of the health care system in Canada in October 2002, in particular, issues concerning mental health and mental illness.

WITNESSES:

Murray; and

Ronald.

It was agreed that the witnesses would remain anonymous and that only their first names would be used during the meeting.

David, Murray, Loïse, and Ronald made statements and answered questions.

At 6:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
