The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 5:00 p.m., this day, in room 2, Victoria Building, the Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C., Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cordy, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, Oliver, Ringuette and Sparrow (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Marc Leblanc and Jean- Denis Fréchette.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 the committee resumed its consideration of the present state and the future of agriculture and forestry in Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Tuesday, October 19, 2004 for full text of the Order of Reference.)

TOPIC: Softwood Lumber and the World Trade Organization Negotiations.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Jim Peterson, P.C., M.P., Minister of International Trade.

WITNESSES:

International Trade Canada:

Elaine Feldman, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Trade, Economic and Environment Policy;

Suzanne Vinet, Director General, Multilateral Trade Policy Bureau.

The Honourable Jim Peterson made a statement and together with the other witnesses answered questions.

At 6:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
