The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 5:03 p.m. in room 160-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Peter A. Stollery, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Corbin, Di Nino, Downe, Eyton, Grafstein, Prud'homme, P.C., Robichaud, P.C. and Stollery (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Poy (1).

Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Blayne Haggart, Analyst.

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday December 8, 2004, the committee continued to examine the development and security challenges facing Africa; the response of the international community to enhance that continent's development and political stability; Canadian foreign policy as it relates to Africa; and other related matters. APPEARING:

WITNESSES:

Rohinton Medhora, Vice-President, Program and Partnership Branch;

Gerd Schönwälder, Team Leader, Peace, Conflict and Development.

The Minister made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6:05 p.m., the committee suspended its proceedings.

At 6:12 p.m., the committee resumed sitting.

Mr. Medhora made a presentation and, along with Mr. Schönwälder, answered questions.

At 7:23 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
