The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 9:07 a.m., this day, in room 257 East Block, the Honourable Michael Kirby, Chair, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Cochrane, Cook, Gill, Keon, Kirby and Pépin (7).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Pearson (1).
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Howard Chodos, Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division and Nancy Miller-Chenier, Analyst, Political and Social Affairs Division.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 7, 2004, the committee continued its examination on the state of the health care system in Canada, in particular issues concerning mental health and mental illness. (See Issue No. 1, Wednesday, October 20, 2004, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

Each participant, in turn, introduced themselves. Valerie Gideon, Shawn Atleo, Onalee Randell, Donna Lyon, Gail Valaskakis, Leesie Nagitarvik and Jennifer Dickson each made a statement.
Together all the witnesses participated in a roundtable discussion with the members of the committee.
At 11:55 a.m., Senator Keon took the Chair.
At 12:05 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
