The Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day, at 11:38 a.m. in the Prince Room, Delta Prince Edward Hotel, the Chair, the Honourable Michael A. Meighen presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Atkins, Day, Forrestall and Meighen (4).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Downe, Banks and Cordy (3).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: William Price, Analyst.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 4, 2004, the subcommittee continued its study of the services and benefits provided to veterans in recognition of their services to Canada. (See Issue No. 1, Monday, October 18, 2004, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

Veterans Affairs Canada:

Jack Stagg, Deputy Minister;

Brian Ferguson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Veterans Services Branch;

Darragh Mogan, Executive Director, Service and Program Modernization Task Force;

Robert Mercer, Executive Director, Public Affairs Branch.

The Chair made an opening statement.

It was agreed that the former Senator Archie Johnston sit at the table.

Mr. Stagg, Mr. Ferguson, Mr. Mogan and Mr. Mercer each made a presentation and answered questions.

The Chair made a closing statement.

At 1:24 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
