The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met in camera at 4:05 p.m. this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Carstairs, Champagne, P.C., Cochrane, Cordy, Eggleton P.C., Fairbairn P.C., Keon, Pépin, Nancy Ruth and Trenholme Counsell (11).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Howard Chodos and Tim Riordan Raaflaub, Research Analysts, Political and Social Affairs Division.

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) the committee proceeded in camera for the purpose of considering a draft agenda.

It was agreed that staff be permitted to stay.

At 5:05 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 10:48 a.m. this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Champagne, P.C., Cochrane, Cordy, Eggleton P.C., Fairbairn P.C., Pépin, Nancy Ruth and Trenholme Counsell (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Watt (1).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament Research Branch: Sonya Norris, Science and Technology Division and Nancy Miller-Chenier, Research Analysts, Political and Social Affairs Division.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, September 28, 2006, the committee continued its examination on Bill C-5, respecting the establishment of the Public Health Agency of Canada and amending certain Acts. (See Issue No. 6, Thursday, October 19, 2006, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

Public Health Agency of Canada:

Dr. David Butler-Jones, Chief Public Health Officer.

Assembly of First Nations:

Dr. Valerie Gideon, Director of Health;

Dr. Kim Barker, Special Public Health Advisor.

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami:

Mary Simon, President;

John Merritt, Legal Counsel, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated;

Onalee Randell, Director of Health.

Mary Simon and Valerie Gideon each made a statement. Together the witnesses answered questions.

Dr. David Butler-Jones made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:29 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(f) the committee proceeded in camera for the purpose of discussing a draft report.

At 12:51 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
