The Senate Standing Committee on Official Languages met this day 4 p.m. in room 9 of the Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Champagne, P.C., Chaput, Comeau, Losier-Cool, Murray, P.C., Robichaud, P.C. and Tardif (7).

Also present: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Marie-Ève Hudon and Élise Hurtubise-Loranger.

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 27, 2006, the committee continued to study, for the purpose of reporting from time to time on, the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it. (For the full text of the Order of Reference, see Issue No. 2, Monday, May 15, 2006.)

WITNESSES:

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP):

Barbara George, Deputy Commissioner, Human Resources;

Louise Morel, Chief Superintendent, Director General, Employee and Management Relations;

Scott Merrithew, OIC Policing Agreement Section;

Gilbert Groulx, Senior Counsel, Legal Services.

The Chair made an opening statement.

At 4:03 p.m., Ms. George made a statement and, along with Mr. Merrithew, Ms. Morel and Mr. Groulx, answered questions.

At 5:16 p.m., the committee recessed.

At 5:23 p.m., the committee reconvened in camera.

It was agreed that senators' staff and the communications officer assigned to the committee be permitted to remain in the room while the committee sits in camera.

In accordance with rule 92(2)e), committee members discussed an agenda.

At 5:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

At 4:07 p.m., Mr. Newton and Ms. Castonguay made a presentation and then answered questions.

At 5:04 p.m., the committee recessed.

At 5:10 p.m., the committee reconvened.

It was agreed that senators' staff and the communications officer assigned to the committee be permitted to remain in the room while the committee sits in camera.

In accordance with rule 92(2)(f), the committee continued in camera for the purposes of considering a draft report.

At 5:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
