The Special Senate Committee on Aging met this day at 9 a.m., in room 705, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Sharon Carstairs, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable senators Carstairs, P.C., Cordy, Keon, Mercer and Stratton (5).

In attendance: Julie Cool, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 1, 2007, the committee continued consideration of the implications of an aging society in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee commenced in camera to considered a draft budget.

At 9:09 a.m., the committee resumed in public.

The Honourable Senator Cordy moved:

That the following special study budget application be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.

Professional and other services $ 112,150
Transportation and Communications 362,360
All other expenditures   49,500
TOTAL $ 524,010

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

It was agreed that the Honourable Senator Mercer be considered on official business on May 8, 2008, for the purpose of making a presentation before the Seniors Advisory Committee on Long-Term Care.

At 9:11 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carstairs, P.C., Chaput, Cools, Cordy, Keon, Mercer and Stratton (7).

In attendance: Julie Cool and Michael Toye, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Sharon Baxter, Executive Director.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Anne Martin-Matthews, Scientific Director, Institute of Aging.

As an individual (by videoconference):

Marcus J. Hollander, President, Hollander Analytical Services Ltd.

Alzheimer Society of Canada:

Patricia Wilkinson, Manager, Media and Government Relations;

Betty Brousse, Volunteer.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Hollander, Ms. Wilkinson, Ms. Brousse, Ms. Baxter, Mr. Juzwishin, Dr. Béland and Ms. Martin-Matthews each made a presentation and answered questions.

It was agreed that staff be permitted to remain in the room for the in camera session.

At 2:47 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:49 p.m, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee proceeded in camera to discuss a draft agenda.

At 3:08 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
