The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day at 4:07 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Michael A. Meighen, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Fox, P.C., Gerstein, Goldstein, Greene, Harb, Massicotte, Meighen, Moore, Raine and Ringuette (10).

In attendance: Marc-André Pigeon and John Bulmer, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, the committee continued its examination of the credit and debit card systems in Canada and their relative rates and fees, in particular for businesses and consumers. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Canadian Federation of Independent Business:

Catherine Swift, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Corinne Pohlmann, Vice-President of National Affairs.

Canadian Bankers Association:

Nancy Hughes Anthony, President and Chief Executive Officer;

Terry Campbell, Vice-President, Policy;

Darren Hannah, Director, Banking Operations.

Ms. Swift made a statement and, with Ms. Pohlmann, answered questions.

At 5:13 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:15 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Hughes Anthony made a statement and with Mr. Campbell and Mr. Hannah, answered questions.

At 6:05 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
