The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day at 4:27 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Michael A. Meighen, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Gerstein, Goldstein, Greene, Harb, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Massicotte, Meighen, Moore, Oliver, Raine and Ringuette (11).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Callbeck (1).

In attendance: Marc-André Pigeon and John Bulmer, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, the committee continued its examination of the credit and debit card systems in Canada and their relative rates and fees, in particular for businesses and consumers. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

MasterCard Canada Inc.:

Kevin Stanton, President;

Diane Miquelon, Vice-President and Team Leader;

Andrea Cotroneo, Vice-President, Canada Regional Counsel.

Visa Canada:

Tim Wilson, Head.

Mr. Stanton made a statement and with Ms. Miquelon and Ms. Cotroneo, answered questions.

At 5:27 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:33 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Wilson made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:24 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
