The Subcommittee on Cities met this day at 4:30 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cordy, Dyck, Eggleton, P.C., Martin and Segal (5).

In attendance: Havi Echenberg and Robin Wisener, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, and delegated to the Subcommittee on Cities on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, the subcommittee continued its examination on issues pertaining to Canada's largest cities. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Centre for the Study of Living Standards:

Andrew Sharpe, Executive Director.

University of Alberta:

Alison Taylor, Professor, Faculty of Education (by video conference);

Harvey Krahn, Professor of Sociology (by video conference).

Simon Fraser University:

Olena Hankivsky, Associate Professor, Public Policy Program Co-Director.

Pathways to Education Canada:

David Hughes, President and Chief Executive Officer.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Sharpe, Ms. Taylor, Mr. Krahn, Ms. Hankisvsky and Mr. Hughes each made a presentation and answered questions.

At 6:04 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.

At 12:20 p.m., it was agreed that the subcommittee adjourn to the call of the chair.
