The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 5:06 p.m. in room 9 of the Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Comeau, Greene, Losier-Cool, Nolin and Tardif (6).

Also present: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, the committee continued to study the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it, within those institutions subject to the act. (For the full text of the order of reference, see Issue No. 1 of the committee proceedings.)

Topic: Olympic and Paralympic 2010 Winter Games.

It was agreed that the Honourable Senator Losier-Cool be elected acting chair of the committee meeting on Monday, October 5, 2009.

At 5:07 p.m., the committee was suspended.

At 5:08 p.m., the committee reconvened.

WITNESSES:

Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages:

Graham Fraser, Commissioner of Official Languages;

Johane Tremblay, Acting Assistant Commissioner, Policy and Communications Branch;

Ghislaine Charlebois, Assistant Commissioner, Compliance Assurance Branch.

Mr. Fraser made a presentation, and along with Ms. Tremblay and Ms. Charlebois, answered questions.

At 6:19 p.m., the committee was suspended.

At 6:23 p.m., the committee reconvened in camera, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), to consider a draft agenda (future business).

At 6:35 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.

Also present: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Minister Aglukkaq made a presentation, and along with Ms. MacLeod and Mr. Farley, answered questions.
