The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9:34 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Brazeau, Campbell, Demers, Dyck, Hubley, Lovelace Nicholas, Patterson, Poirier, Raine, Sibbeston, St. Germain, P.C., and Stewart Olsen (12).
In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Ceri Au, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.
Also in attendance: The oficial reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. WITNESSES:
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada:
Michel Roy, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Treaties and Aboriginal Government;
Stephen Gagnon, Director General, Implementation.
Mr. Roy made a statement and, together with Mr. Gagnon, responded to questions.
At 10:31 a.m. the committee suspended.
At 10:40 a.m. the committee, pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), resumed, in camera, to consider a draft agenda.
It was moved that staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
At 11:07 a.m., the committee resumed, in public.
The Honourable Senator Demers moved:
That the following special study budget application (federal government's responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples) be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration.
Summary of Expenditures
Professional and Other Services $ 4,275 Transportation and Communications — All Other Expenditures $ 4,725 TOTAL $ 9,000
The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
At 11:11 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
