The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day, at 5:08 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the deputy chair, the Honourable Mobina S.B. Jaffer, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Hubley, Jaffer, Kochhar and Stratton (6).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Marshall and Munson (2).

In attendance: Julian Walker and Julia Nicol, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the committee continued its examination of issues relating to human rights and, inter alia, to review the machinery of government dealing with Canada's international and national human rights obligations. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Robert Steadward, Founder and Honorary President.

As an individual:

Mary Law, Professor, School of Rehabilitation Science/CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, McMaster University.

Global Disability Research in Sport and Health Network:

Jill Le Clair, Founder and Chair.

Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability:

Jane Arkell, Executive Director;

Jason Dunkerley, Program Coordinator.

Variety Village:

John Willson, Chief Executive Officer;

Archie Allison, Director, Outreach and Education.

Mr. Steadward, Ms. Law and Ms. Le Clair each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 6:30 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:36 p.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Arkell and Mr. Willson each made a statement and, together with Messrs. Dunkerley and Allison, answered questions.

At 7:29 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
