The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day in room 9, Victoria Building, at 4:33 p.m., the chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, Dagenais, Harb, Hubley, MacDonald, Manning, Oliver, Poirier, Poy and Raine (10).
In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, the committee continued its study of the use of the Internet, new media and social media and the respect for Canadians' language rights. Ms. McIntyre, Mr. Nichols, Mr. Dugas and Mr. Michaud made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 5:50 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 5:55 p.m., the committee resumed.
Mr. Raider, Ms. Frappier, Ms. Beaudoin and Ms. Dorval made an opening statement and answered questions.
At 7:01 p.m., the committee suspended.
At 7:04 p.m., the committee resumed, and the committee considered a draft budget.
It was agreed that the following budget proposal (special study on the use of the Internet, new media and social media and the respect for Canadians' language rights) for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2013 be concurred in and submitted to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:
