The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:29 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, Chair, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Braley, Callbeck, Champagne, P.C., Demers, Dyck, Eggleton, P.C., Martin, Merchant, Ogilvie, Seidman and Verner, P.C. (11).

In attendance: Karin Phillips and James Gauthier, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee considered a draft special study budget application.

The Honourable Senator Eggleton, P.C., moved:

That the following special study budget application (to examine and report on the accessibility of post-secondary education in Canada,) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, in the amount of $ 21,500, be approved for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration

Summary of Expenditures

Professional and Other Services    $ 6,100
Transportation and Communications    0
All Other Expenditures    $ 15,500
TOTAL    $ 21,500

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 10:30 a.m., pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 23, 2011, the committee continued its study on the progress in implementing the 2004 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care.

Canadian Healthcare Association:

Pamela Fralick, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Canadian Cancer Society:

Daniel Demers, Director, National Public Issues.

Canadian Home Care Association:

Nadine Henningsen, Executive Director.

Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association:

Sharon Baxter, Executive Director.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Fralick, Mr. Demers, Ms. Henningsen, and Ms. Baxter each made a statement and, together, answered questions.

At 12:21 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
