The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:31 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Callbeck, Champagne, P.C., Cordy, Demers, Eaton, Eggleton, P.C., Martin, Merchant, Ogilvie, Seidman, Verner, P.C., and Zimmer (12).

In attendance: Karin Phillips and Michel-Ange Pantal, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 23, 2011, the committee continued its study on the progress in implementing the 2004 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 3.).

APPEARING:

The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, P.C., M.P., Minister of Health.

WITNESSES:

Health Canada:

Glenda Yeates, Deputy Minister;

Abby Hoffman, Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Branch.

Public Health Agency of Canada:

Dr. David Butler-Jones, Chief Public Health Officer.

Department of Finance Canada:

Chantal Maheu, General Director, Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch.

The chair made a statement.

The minister made a statement and, together with Ms. Yeates and Dr. Butler-Jones, answered questions.

At 11:30 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:34 a.m., the committee resumed.

Ms. Maheu made a statement and, together with Ms. Hoffman and Dr. Butler-Jones, answered questions.

At 12:32 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
