The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met this day at 10:30 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Larry W. Smith (Saurel), presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Buth, Callbeck, Chaput, Eaton, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Mockler, Seth and Smith (Saurel) (9).

In attendance: Sylvain Fleury and Raphaëlle Deraspe, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 7, 2013, the committee continued its examination of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 4.)

WITNESSES:

Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada:

Nadir Patel, Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Financial Officer, Corporate Planning, Finance and Information Technology;

Arun Thangaraj, Director General, Financial Resource Planning and Management Bureau.

Employment and Social Development Canada:

Alain P. Séguin, Chief Financial Officer;

Catherine Demers, Executive Director, Federal, Provincial, Territorial Partnerships, Employment Programs and Partnerships Skills Employment Branch;

Jacques Paquette, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Income Security and Social Development Branch.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation:

Brian Naish, Chief Financial Officer;

Debra Darke, Acting Vice President, Regional Operations and Assisted Housing.

Mr. Patel, Mr. Naish and Mr. Séguin made a statement and, together with Mr. Thangaraj, Ms. Darke, Mr. Paquette and Ms. Demers, answered questions.

At 11:36 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
