The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day at 4:02 p.m. in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Daniel Lang, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boisvenu, Dagenais, Dallaire, Day, Lang, Mitchell, Segal, Wells and White (9).

In attendance: Holly Porteous and Wolfgang Koerner, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, the committee began its study on Canada's national security and defence policies, practices, circumstances and capabilities.

WITNESSES:

National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces:

Rear-Admiral Jennifer Bennett, Chief Reserves and Cadets;

Brigadier-General K.L. Woiden, Chief of Staff Army Reserve.

Reserves 2000:

Lieutenant-Colonel (Ret'd) John Selkirk, Executive Director.

As an individual:

Colonel (Ret'd) Pierre LeBlanc.

The chair made an opening statement.

The Honourable Senator Day moved that the order of reference regarding veterans affairs, adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, be delegated to the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Rear-Admiral Jennifer Bennett made a statement and, together with Brigadier-General K.L. Woiden, answered questions.

At 5:32 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:38 p.m., the committee resumed.

Lieutenant-Colonel (Ret'd) John Selkirk made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:25 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 7:00 p.m., the committee resumed.

Colonel (Retired) Pierre LeBlanc made a statement and answered questions.

At 8:01 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
