The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 5:04 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable René Cormier, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Gagné, Jaffer, Maltais, Mockler, Moncion and Smith (7).

In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Angus Wilson, Legislative Clerk, Senate Committees Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the committee continued to examine and report on Canadians' views about modernizing the Official Languages Act. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 12.)

WITNESSES:

Quebec Community Groups Network:

James Shea, President;

Geoffrey Chambers, Vice-President;

Eva Ludvig, Director;

Sylvia Martin-Laforge, Director General.

Quebec English School Boards Association:

Jennifer Maccarone, President;

Marion Sandilands, Lawyer (Power Law).

Community Health and Social Services Network:

Jennifer Johnson, Executive Director (by videoconference);

Russel Kueber, Manager of Programs (by videoconference).

It was moved:

That photographers be allowed in the committee room to take photographs in a way that minimizes any disruption to the proceedings.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Shea, Ms. Ludvig and Mr. Chambers made statements and, together with Ms. Martin-Laforge, answered questions.

At 6:05 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:11 p.m., the committee resumed.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Johnson, Mr. Kueber and Ms. Maccarone made statements and, together with Ms. Sandilands, answered questions.

At 6:57 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
