The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 5:02 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the chair, the Honourable René Cormier, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Gagné, McIntyre, Mégie, Moncion, Poirier and Smith (7).

In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; and Stéphanie Pépin, Legislative Clerk, Committees Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the committee continued its study in order to examine and report on Canadians' views about modernizing the Official Languages Act. No. 12.
)

Marc A. Giroux, Commissioner.

Courts Administration Service:

Daniel Gosselin, Chief Administrator;

Chantal Carbonneau, Deputy Chief Administrator, Judicial and Registry Services.

Canadian Bar Association:

Mark Power, Chair, French Speaking Common Law Members Section;

Marc-André O'Rourke, Lawyer, Legislation and Law Reform.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Giroux made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Gosselin made a statement and, together with Ms. Carbonneau, answered questions.

At 5:58 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:03 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Power and Mr. O'Rourke made statements and answered questions.

At 6:52 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:55 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft report.

It was agreed that the outline of the third interim report be adopted.

At 7:01 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
