The Subcommittee on Communications of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met in camera this day in Room 256-S at 4:50 p.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Poulin presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Johnson, Poulin and Spivak (3).

In attendance: Terrence J. Thomas, Research Officer, Economics Division, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997 and the committee on October 30, 1997, the subcommittee met in camera to consider future business.

It was agreed -- That the proposed schedule be adopted subject to possible changes to the witness list.

It was agreed -- That the subcommittee proceed with its fact-finding mission to Europe from November 14 until November 22, 1998.

It was agreed -- That the subcommittee divide into two groups, in order for one group to attend the IDATE 98 Conference on Convergence and the Internet in Montpellier, while the other hold meetings in London.

At 5:10 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Subcommittee on Communications of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Poulin, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senator Poulin (1).

In attendance: Terrence J. Thomas, Research Officer, Economics Division, Research Branch, Library of Parliament and Matthew Fraser, Special Advisor to the Subcommittee.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997 and the committee on October 30, 1997, the subcommittee continued its consideration of Canada's international competitive position in Communications. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 30, 1997 for full text of Order of Reference.)

Nick Masciantonio, Director, Government Relations.

The witnesses each made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:15 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997 and the committee on October 30, 1997, the subcommittee continued its consideration of Canada's international competitive position in Communications. Margo Langford, Internet Policy, IBM Canada and Chair, CAIP;

John Nemanic, President, Internet Direct and Member of the CAIP Board; and

Wayne MacLaurin, President, Cyberus Online (Ottawa) and former member of the CAIP Board;

Timothy Denton, Legal Counsel, Internet Direct.

The witnesses each made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed -- That, notwithstanding the decision of the subcommittee not to hold a meeting without a representative of each party present, the evidence received on October 7, 1998 be printed and that the meeting forms part of the proceedings of the subcommittee.

At 4:20 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
