The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 9:32 a.m., this day, in room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Murray, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bolduc, Cools, Day, De Bané, P.C., Doody, Finnerty, Mahovlich, Moore, Murray, P.C. and Stratton (10).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Officer, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of National Defence:

Margaret Purdy, Associate Deputy Minister, Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness;

James E. Harlick, Assistant Deputy Minister, Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Emergency Preparedness.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 1, 2001, the committee continued its examination of the expenditures set out in the Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2002.

Ms Purdy made an opening statement and with Mr. Harlick answered questions from member of the committee.

At 11:02 a.m., the committee continued its meeting in camera.

The committee undertook discussion of its revised draft report on the Role of Government in the Financing of Deferred Maintenance costs in Canada's Post-Secondary Institutions.

After discussion, it was agreed that the report be adopted and that the Chair present the report to the Senate.

At 11:28 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair
