Proceedings of the Standing Senate Committee on
Fisheries and Oceans
Issue 3 - Evidence, February 26, 2003
OTTAWA, Wednesday, February 26, 2003
The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 6:23 p.m. to consider a draft budget.
Senator Gerald J. Comeau (Chairman) in the Chair.
[English]
The Chairman: Honourable senators, as is reflected on the agenda, we hope to be in camera for the first portion of the meeting and then we return to the public portion.
With that in mind, I ask permission of the members of the committee as to whether we wish to have reporting or not. I would not suggest that we need that, but if the committee agrees we would not have reporting while we are in camera.
Senator Cook: I will take my direction from the chair, whatever you feel is appropriate I am comfortable with.
The Chairman: That will be just for the first part of the meeting.
The committee continued in camera.
The committee resumed in public.
The Chairman: We are back on the public record now.
I would entertain a motion for a budget.
Senator Johnson: I so move.
The Chairman: Any questions or comments?
I see a nodding of heads; I believe we have a consensus.
Senator Johnson: Based on our discussion and you can take that to the committee.
The Chairman: All in favour, honourable senators?
Hon. Senators: Agreed.
The Chairman: I just wanted to read this note into the record. This is an excerpt from the February 4 meeting of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans. Mr. John Radosevic, the President of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union-CAW-West Coast said:
Go to the Senate standing committee fisheries report of a couple of years ago. Go to your Auditor General's report of a couple of years ago. Look at Stephen Owen's report of two years ago. All these reports contain a slice of the same things we're talking about. ... We support the Senate standing committee reports.
That is nice praise.
The committee adjourned.
