The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 5:08 p.m. in room 9 of the Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Maria Chaput, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chaput, De Bané, P.C., Greene, Losier-Cool, Mockler, Seidman and Tardif (7).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Fraser (1).

In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service; and Francine Pressault, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, the committee continued to study the application of the Official Languages Act and of the regulations and directives made under it. (Topic: English- Speaking Communities in Quebec.) (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Statistics Canada:

Jane Badets, Director, Social and Aboriginal Statistics Division;

Jean-François Lepage, Analyst, Social and Aboriginal Statistics Division;

Brigitte Chavez, Analyst, Social and Aboriginal Statistics Division.

Ms. Badets made an opening statement and, along with Ms. Chavez and Mr. Lepage, answered questions.

At 6:26 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:30 p.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e) of the Rules of the Senate, the committee proceeded in camera to consider a draft agenda.

At 6:43 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
