The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 11:30 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Ratna Omidvar, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bovey, Dasko, Kutcher, Mégie, Mockler, Moodie, Omidvar, Patterson, Petitclerc and Verner, P.C. (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator Brazeau (1).

Participating in the meeting: Chantal Cardinal, Procedural Clerk, Committees Directorate; Laura Blackmore, Analyst, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 28, 2022, the committee began its study on the Federal Framework for Suicide Prevention.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Carolyn Bennett, P.C., M.P., Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

WITNESSES:

Public Health Agency of Canada:

Candice St-Aubin, Vice-President, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Branch;

Stephanie Priest, Director General, Centre for Mental Health and Well-being, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Branch (by videoconference).

Health Canada:

Heather Jeffrey, Associate Deputy Minister;

Suki Wong, Director General, Mental Health Directorate, Strategic Policy Branch.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Rhonda Kropp, Associate Vice-President, Research - Strategy (by videoconference).

Indigenous Services Canada:

Dr. Tom Wong, Chief Medical Officer of Public Health (by videoconference).

The minister made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:30 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:31 p.m., the committee resumed.

Heather Jeffrey, Stephanie Priest, Candice St-Aubin, Rhonda Kropp and Tom Wong answered questions.

At 1:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
