Ottawa – The Steering Committee of the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration (CIBA) has announced the easing of certain COVID-19 preventive measures in Senate workplaces, effective immediately.

Many preventive measures, such as mandatory masking, remain in place at all Senate workplaces.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the health and safety of senators and Senate staff have been the most important considerations when implementing preventive measures. In following the evolving guidance provided by public health authorities, the Senate has continually reviewed and adapted its preventive measures throughout the course of this pandemic.

Quick facts

  • The vaccination requirement for all Senate staff members remains in effect. Members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, visitors, contractors, volunteers and interns also need to be fully vaccinated in order to have access to Senate workplaces.
  • The wearing of masks remains mandatory in all common spaces, such as entrances, hallways, washrooms and break rooms. Masks may now be removed at workstations or desks where two-metre physical distancing is possible.
  • The cafeteria in the Senate of Canada Building is now open at full capacity with both packaged items and warm food service options. Indoor dining is permitted, with two-metre distancing while seated. While waiting in line, two-metre distancing and wearing of masks are required.
  • Shuttle services have returned to full capacity. Masks must be worn at all times on shuttle buses.
  • Increased frequency of cleaning of high-touch objects and common areas will continue, along with contact tracing for confirmed cases of COVID-19.
  • Under the Parliament of Canada Act, CIBA is considered the employer on behalf of the Senate and has authority to implement workplace measures.
