‘It is genocide’: Ukraine President describes country’s fight for survival
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy put in stark terms the Eastern European country’s fight for survival against Russian invaders in an address to Canada’s Parliament.
“It is genocide,” he said.
“When we call on the world to support us it is not just about an ordinary conflict. It is about saving lives of millions of people. Ordinary women and men. Children. Our families. Whole communities. Entire cities.”
It was the second time Mr. Zelenskyy had addressed Parliament. In March 2022, with the war just 20 days old, he appeared by video looking haggard as he described the steady stream of casualty reports.
On September 22, 2023, he appeared in person — entering the House of Commons to a rapturous standing ovation — with a defiant message.
“Ukraine, not genocide, will be victorious,” he said. “People will be the winners, not the Kremlin. Freedom will be the winner. Justice will be the winner.”
Speaker of the Senate Raymonde Gagné also spoke.
“Our message today, which you can bring back to your people, is clear: the Canadian people stand with Ukraine,” she said to applause.
“We aren’t going anywhere.”
Mr. Zelenskyy noted that Canada was home to the world’s first memorial to the Holodomor, which saw millions of Ukrainians starve to death in the early 1930s when their crops were seized by the Soviet Union.
“You’ve always defended freedom. You have always defended justice,” he said.
And that, he said, is why Canadians know Ukraine will triumph.
“You can know this for sure about us, because you know for sure about yourselves that you would never submit to evil.”
