The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, met at 10:01 a.m., this day, in Room 160-S Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable Charlie Watt presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Berntson, Chalifoux, Forest, Johnson, Pearson, St. Germain, P.C., Taylor and Watt (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Cohen, Wilson and Butts (3).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett and Mary Hurley.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday March 26, 1998, the committee, continued its examination of Bill C-6, An Act to provide for an integrated system of land and water mangement in the Mackenzie Valley, to establish certain boards for that purpose and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Jane Stewart, P.C., M.P., Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

The minister made an opening statement and answered questions from members of the committee.

After debate, the Honourable Senator St. Germain moved -- That the committee report Bill C-6 back to the Senate without amendment.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on June 16, 1998, the committee at 10:37 a.m., began its examination of Bill C-30, An Act respecting the powers of the Mi'kmaq of Nova Scotia in relation to education.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development:

Joe McNeil, Advisor, Intergovernmental Affairs, Atlantic Region;

Allan Cracower, Legal Advisor.

The minister made an opening statement and, with Mr. McNeil and Mr. Cracower, answered questions from members of the committee.

After debate, it was agreed to adopt sections 1 to 13 of the bill, the schedule and the title of the bill.

The Honourable Senator Forest moved -- That the committee report Bill C-30 back to the Senate without amendment.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

At 11:32 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
