The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day, in the Atlanta Room at the Coast Edmonton Plaza Hotel, Edmonton, Alberta at 9:05 a.m., the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fairbairn, P.C., Hays, Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent), Rossiter, Spivak, Stratton, St-Germain, and Whelan, P.C. (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Ghitter.

In attendance: Jean-Denis Frechette, June Dewetering, Research Officers, Research Branch, Library of Parliament; Dave Newman, Communications Officer.

Also in attendance: The Official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to its order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 26, 1998, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-4, to amend the Canadian Wheat Board and to make consequential amendments to other Acts. (See issue No. 3, Thursday, February 26, 1998 for full text of Order of Reference .)

The Chairman made an opening statement and introduced Senators in attendance.

Mr. Wagstaff made a statement and with Mr. Scarlett answered questions.

Mr. Motiuk made a statement and with Mr. Balderston answered questions.

Mr. Pentrice made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Trueblood made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Comfort, Mr. Livingstone and Mr. Jackson each made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:15 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
