The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day, at 9:01 a.m., in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hays, Rossiter, Spivak, Stratton (7).

In attendance: June Dewetering, Research Officer, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to its order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, June 16, 1998, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-26, An Act to amend the Canada Grain Act and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Administrative Monetary Penalties Act and to repeal the Grain Futures Act.

WITNESSES:

From Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Mr. Barry Senft, Chief Commissioner;

Ms Marilyn Kapitany, Director, Corporate Services; and

Mr. Régis Gosselin, Manager, Corporate Information Services.

Mr. Senft made a statement and, with Ms Kapitany and Mr. Gosselin, answered questions.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Hays -- That the committee dispense with clause-by-clause and that the chairman report the Bill C-26 without amendment.

The question being put on the motion, -- It was agreed.

It was moved by the Honourable Senator Hays -- That the committee proceed in camera, for the consideration of a draft agenda.

At 9:29 a.m., the committee proceeded in camera.

At 10:26 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
