The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 705-VB, the Chairman, the Honourable Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hays, Rossiter, Spivak, Stratton, Taylor and Whelan, P.C. (8).
In attendance: June Dewetering and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.
WITNESSES:
From the Canadian Federation of Agriculture:
Jack Wilkinson, President;
Sally Rutherford, Executive Director.
From the Canadian Wheat Board:
Lorne Hehn, Chief Commissioner;
Peter Watts, Market Analyst, Western Europe;
Larry Sawatzky, Industry Analyst; and
Earl Geddes, Farmer Relations.
Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and future of agriculture in Canada, consideration of the effect of international subsidies on farm income.
Jack Wilkinson made a statement and, with Sally Rutherford, answered questions.
It was agreed, -- that the Canadian Federation of Agriculture's presentation be attached as an appendix to these proceedings.
Lorne Hehn, Earl Geddes, Larry Sawatzky and Peter Watts each made statements and, together answered questions.
It was agreed -- to attach the supporting documents from the Canadian Wheat Board as appendices to these proceedings.
At 12:17 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
