The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 257-EB, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Gustafson, Hays, Robichaud, P.C. (Saint-Louis-de-Kent), Rossiter, Spivak, Stratton, Taylor and Whelan, P.C. (9).

In attendance: June Dewetering, Research Officer, Research Branch, Library of Parliament; Dave Newman, Newman Communications.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Cattlemen's Association:

Mr. Neil Jahnke, Chair, Foreign Trade Committee;

Mr. Jim Caldwell, Director, Government Affairs.

From the Canadian Pork Council:

Mr. Martin Rice, Executive Director.

From the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association:

Mr. Edward Cook, Chairman;

Mr. Paul Earl, Manitoba Policy Manager.

Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and the future of agriculture in Canada, consideration of the effect of international trade issues on farm income.

Mr. Neil Jahnke made a statement.

Mr. Martin Rice made a statement.

Together, with Mr. Jim Caldwell, the witnesses answered questions.

Mr. Edward Cook made a statement and, with Mr. Paul Earl, answered questions.

At 12:18 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
