The Subcommittee on Communications of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Deputy Chairman, the Honourable Senator Spivak, presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Bacon, Maheu and Spivak (3).

In attendance: Terrence J. Thomas, Research Officer, Economics Division, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997 and the committee on October 30, 1997, the subcommittee continued its consideration of Canada's international competitive position in communications. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 30, 1997 for full text of Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Association of Broadcasters -- New Media Task Force:

Peter Miller, Executive Vice-President and General Counsel;

Cynthia Rathwell, Legal Counsel;

Hal Blackadar, CFNY-FM; and

Glenn O'Farrell, Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs, Global Television.

The witnesses each made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed -- That an extension for tabling the final report be sought from December 31, 1998 to March 31, 1999.

At 4:55 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
