The Subcommittee on Communications of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, Centre Block, the Honourable Senator Poulin (Chair), presiding.

Members of the subcommittee present: The Honourable Senators Johnson and Poulin (2).

In attendance: Terrence J. Thomas, Research Officer, Economics Division, Research Branch, Library of Parliament and Till Heyde, Legislative Clerk, Committees and Private Legislation Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Orders of Reference adopted by the Senate on October 29, 1997 and the committee on October 30, 1997, the subcommittee continued its consideration of Canada's international competitive position in Communications. (See Issue No. 1, Thursday, October 30, 1997 for full text of Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN):

Gilles Valiquette, President;

Paul Spurgeon, General Counsel.

The witnesses each made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m. the subcommittee proceeded in camera to consider the draft of the report.

At 5:05 p.m., the subcommittee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
