The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 5:30 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, the Chairman, the Honourable Terrance R. Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bolduc, Cools, Ferretti-Barth, Forest, Kinsella, Lavoie-Roux, Moore, Robichaud (Saint-Louis-de-Kent), Sparrow and Stratton (10).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Marcel Massé, P.C., M.P., President of the Treasury Board.

WITNESS:

From the Secretariat of the Treasury Board of Canada:

Ms Shirley Siegel, Executive Director, Senior Level Retention and Compensation Division, Human Resources Branch.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 9, 1997, the committee began its examination of the Main Estimates laid before Parliament for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1998.

The Honourable Marcel Massé made a statement and, with Ms Siegel, answered questions.

At 7:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
