The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met at 9:45 a.m. this day, in Room 505 Victoria, the Chairman, the Honourable Terrance R. Stratton, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bolduc, Bryden, Cools, Forest, Joyal, P.C., Lavoie-Roux, Mercier, Moore and Stratton (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Grafstein and Simard (3).

In attendance: Mr. Guy Beaumier, Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the McGill Association of Continuing Education Students:

Mr. George Butcher.

From the Canadian Bar Association, National Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section:

Mr. Robert A. Klotz, Chair; and

Ms Tamra L. Thomson, Director, Legislation and Law Reform.

From the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians:

Grand Chief Doug Maracle; and

Mr. Chris McCormick, Anti GST Coordinator.

From the National Association of Career Colleges:

Mr. Paul Kitchin, Executive Director.

From the Canadian Insolvency Practitioners Association:

Mr. Norman Kondo, President;

Ms Donna Collins, Secretary Treasurer; and

Mr. Stanley Ruthen, General Member.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, June 8, 1998, the committee continued its examination of Bill C-36.

Mr. Butcher from the McGill Association of Continuing Education Students made a statement and answered questions.

Ms Thomson and Mr. Klotz from the Canadian Bar Association, National Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section made statements and answered questions.

Senator Bolduc tabled with the committee documentation received from the Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec.

Grand Chief Doug Maracle made a statement and, with Mr. McCormick, answered questions.

Mr. Kitchin from the National Association of Career Colleges made a statement and answered questions.

Mr. Kondo, Ms Collins and Mr. Ruthen made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:45 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
